After directing and executive producing the pilot for Fox’s police comedy series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” directing duo Phil Lord & Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie, 21 Jump Street) have been busy setting up  new TV projects with great talents. We reported on a collaboration with Johnny Depp for a comedy series called “Torched” but didn’t highlight “The Last Man on Earth” which the duo is making with Will Forte.

Now Deadline reports Lord & Miller have set up a new comedy series at ABC called “American Monster” starring “The Daily Show” correspondent Kristen Schaal, who also wrote the script with her husband Rich Blomquist (a former writer on the aforementioned political satire show).

The series sounds about as odd as Schaal’s brand of comedy as it follows a small-town misfit who becomes an unlikely celebrity when she goes on trial for the murder of the century. This is yet another project set up through 20th Century Fox Television, where the Lord Miller banner has a three-year deal that just kicked off in May. We’re surprised this series didn’t land at the Fox network like the other two series, but they likely only have so much room for new shows.

Lord & Miller are two of the hottest comedy directors right now, and their work on 21 Jump Street, along with the animated Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and the promising The LEGO Movie, prove that they can direct action and comedy perfectly, with plenty of fantastic set pieces.

This will be a big test for Schaal, who has some strange comedic sensibilities, almost like a female Andy Kaufman. Schaal has enjoyed success as a series regular on “Bob’s Burgers” recently (she also voices the triceratops in Toy Story 3 and the animated shorts that have followed. We’re not sure how her brand of humor will translate to her own show, but we’ll find out if the show makes it to air.
