A meme is defined as “an idea, behavior or style that spreads from person to person within a culture.” Needless to say, with the invention of the internet, memes are more pervasive than ever. So we share the laughs but unfortunately we also share the horror. I’m glad we can all have shared nightmares stemming from the super disturbing ones! Here’s 5 of the creepiest memes ever!
Slenderman is a tall, thin human-like creature, with long gangly arms that are able to extend and a white featureless face. He lurks in the shadows, stalking his victims. I’m seriously scared already. Good thing I have cats jumping around my house as I write this. Gulp.
The concept of the Slenderman originated from a Something Awful creepy photoshop contest. The above image is one of the more popular, it shows a creepy man following a group of children. Rumors swirled on 4chan that the children seen in the photo went missing shortly after it was taken. The legend of Slenderman has inspired countless images, videos and even a video game. It has inspired me to pole vault into my bed, avoiding what lies underneath, too many times to count.
Another internet legend, this one involves a disturbing image that traumatizes a women so much that she commits suicide. The image is titled smile.jpg and is seen above. Supposedly. No one knows for sure what the REAL image looks like. Whatever it is, it haunts your dreams until you share the image, in effect destroying other’s lives. Supposedly. I apologize in advance if I’ve ruined your lives by sharing the above image. My bad!
Jeff the Killer
Jeff the Killer is one of the most popular internet pop-ups, you know those animated gifs that try to make you crap your pants when you’re watching something innocuous only to have a terrifying image pop up out of nowhere? Thanks, internet! His catchphrase is ‘Go to sleep’. My response to that catchphrase is ‘Hell, no!’ The myth regarding Jeff the Killer involves Jeff tripping while holding a vat of acid leading to his horrifying visage. You can do better myth writers… ‘Cause that’s just scary stupid.
The Rake originated on a 4chan board, after a user requested help from fellow 4channers to create a new monster. Thus was born The Rake, a humanoid creature who stalks and attacks, like a Slenderman without the suit. The meme quickly took off, even inspiring a F*ck yeah! tumblr blog. Did I mention it has tiny and dull teeth? The better to eat you with…in a slow and painful manner.
The Lavender Town Suicides
When the Pokemon Red and Green video games were released in Japan in 1996, rumors swirled that the high-pitched soundtrack of the lavender level, something only young children could hear, caused severe headaches and ultimately lead to the suicide of over 200 children. The music was changed when the game was released in the USA, which only fueled the fire of cover-up conspiracies.
Here’s the original music. Just to be safe, maybe you shouldn’t listen to it if you’re under the age of 15. Or even if you’re over 15…I mean at the very least, it’s kind of annoying and ear-wormy.
