Democracy is a beautiful thing. It’s so beautiful in fact, that many take to the internet to fulfill the will of the people through online voting. That’s when democracy can get not so beautiful, but all kinds of hilarious. Here’s 6 of the funniest examples of online voting gone awry.
Chuck Norris Bridge
The country of Slovakia, took to the internet when it came to naming a new bridge that spans the Morava River. The number one choice…The Chuck Norris Bridge. Slovak officials wisely rejected the winner and instead went with the Freedom Cycling Bridge. Word on the street is that Chuck Norris threatened to roundhouse kick the bridge into rubble if anyone dare tread on anything named after him. Not really, but still! Respect the Norris!
Justin Bieber World Tour
When a website polled the internet as to where The Biebs should travel next on his world tour, the internet spoke. They wanted him sent to North Korea. That’s cold, internet! 4chan is largely held responsible for the prank, but sadly Bieber did not visit North Korea. They did get a visit from Dennis Rodman, however! Yeah… not quite the same thing.
City of Austin Solid Waste Services Department
When the city of Austin seeked help from the public to rename its solid waste facility, they were surprised when the winner was a tribute to Limp Bizkit frontman, Fred Durst; The Fred Durst Society of the Humanities and Arts. Personally I would have gone with Ministry of Filth, but I guess a person responsible for a lot of musical trash is a fitting honoree.
Taylor Swift Concert
4Chan struck again when it hijacked the vote for the 2012 Taylor Swift on Campus Live Promotion. The winner? The Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Get it? Ouch. I’m guessing 4Chan is not a fan of break-up pop. The school was eventually disqualified, but Taylor Swift donated 10,000 dollars to the school anyway. Which is awfully sweet of her. See… she isn’t all annoying.
NASA/Stephen Colbert Kerfuffle
NASA held an online contest to name a node at the space station. With write-in votes, the name “Colbert” beat out NASA’s four suggested options: Serenity, Legacy, Earthrise and Venture. They eventually went with Tranquility but, Colbert was honored by NASA when they named a treadmill named after him. Not quite as cool as a node but still pretty cool. I guess.
Mountain Dew Naming Contest
When Mountain Dew asked fans to name their new apple-flavored soft drink the results were not what they expected and pretty much unusable. Good call. I don’t know anyone who would drink something called Fapple or Gushing Granny, no matter how hilarious they are.
Which one is your fave? Do you think companies should just give up on online voting promotions? Let us know in the comments!
