It’s nice when companies and organizations try to join the modern world and get their social media on. And why shouldn’t they?  It’s a great way to promote your brand as long as you know what you’re doing. Because internet snafus have a tendency to blow up and trust me companies, you don’t want that.  Here’s a look at the 8 biggest social media gaffes of 2012.

McDonald’s McDStories Hashtag

Back in January, McDonald’s tried to engage followers by creating the mcdstories hashtag, encouraging fans to share their heartwarming McDonald’s memories. Naturally Tweeters hijacked the hashtag to share their McDonald’s horror stories. McDonald’s later admitted that “#mcdstories did not go as planned.” I don’t know…I was LOVIN’ it!

Woody Harrelson’s AMA Fail

Back in January, Woody Harrelson agreed to do a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything). But unfortunately for fans, the AMA quickly turned into nothing but blatant promotion for Harrelson’s new film Rampart. Reddit users were piiiissed. Cue Scumbag Woody meme.

NRA’s Tweet The Morning After The Aurora Shootings

Yes, the NRA did pre-schedule this inappropriate Tweet. But that doesn’t mean that it didn’t come off as highly insensitive the morning after 12 people were killed at a The Dark Knight Rises midnight screening.

CelebBoutique’s Clueless Aurora Tweet

Okay, this Tweet isn’t a case of bad timing, it’s a case of not thinking. It takes how many seconds to see why something is trending?  It should come as no surprise that Kim Kardashian would be associated with something so brainless. I kid, I kid.

KitchenAid Tweeter Goes Rogue

Supposedly an employee of Kitchenaid’s social media team accidentally posted this from the company’s account instead of his personal one after the first presidential debate. Kitchenaid quickly removed and apologized for the offensive tweet. Which is good because now my Kitchenaid mixer love will not have to be spoiled by rude grandma jokes.

American Apparel’s Hurricane Sandy Sale

American Apparel is always kind of offensive, I mean seriously? Trying to bring back pleated pant fronts? No thank you. But having a Hurricane Sandy sale? That’s just gross. Like micro-Poly High-Waist Pleated Pant gross.

Gap’s Hurricane Sandy Gaffe

At least they asked those devastated by Hurricane Sandy if they were safe before they encouraged millions without power to online shop. So little thinking went into this tweet it’s kind of unbelievable.

Susan Boyle’s Twitter Hashtag Mega Fail

#susanalbumparty was just about the greatest thing to ever happen on Twitter. This is so fail it became win again.  Also it finally made me interested in Susan Boyle, but immediately   uninterested again when I realized it was a flub.

Were there any great ones I forgot? Let me know in the comments!
