8 Of The Greatest Sci-Fi-Based Pop/Rock Songs

By February 19, 2013

Some of my favorite songs also just happen to have a heavy dose of sci-fi in them. Aliens, robots, alien love, robot love, and a man from mars who eats guitars. What’s not to love? Here’s my 8 of my all time favorite sci-fi based songs!

Space Oddity- David Bowie

There are like at least 10 Bowie songs I could’ve picked, but this one has a special place in my heart. I will never forget hearing this song for the first time on a classic rock station as a kid; I don’t think I ever listened to a song’s lyrics more intensely than that first time. I was obsessed with what happened to Major Tom. And I remain miffed that Ground Control was all like ‘SHE KNOWS!’ when Major Tom made the simple request that they tell his wife he loved her very much. Take it easy Ground Control!

Mr. Roboto-Styx

Am I the only one who choreographed a routine to this song as a child? What can I say…my stiff dance moves were tailor-made for robot songs.

Rocket Man-Elton John

Another great song about an astronaut who loves his wife. No wonder astronauts are so friggin’ hot…it’s practically science! Also I never get tired of the William Shatner version. I think I almost cried when I first saw it.

Iron Man-Black Sabbath

This song is pure friggin’ badass! This sonh is a total trip out. SPOILER ALERT: Iron Man is the future he came to warn you about!! Or wait..something like that. Time travel always confuses me.

Subterranean Homesick Alien-Radiohead

I’ve never fantasized about being kidnapped by aliens, but I’m glad people exist who do fantasize about such a thing. Because I love the art it creates. And the Coast to Coast am guests.

Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Part 1-The Flaming Lips

They had me with the opening line ‘Her name is Yoshimi. She’s a black belt in karate.’ I love a good female ass kicker. I feel confident she will defeat the evil machines and not let them eat us. That would be bad. Luckily, she is so badass.

One of my proudest moments was learning the rap segments of this song. It makes me feel so cool.

Robot Song- Flight of the Conchords

Is this song deserving of a spot on this list? Affirmative! This song can take over my world anytime! I’ve never thought I’d laugh so hard at the notion that ‘The humans are dead!’
