A New Stephen King Adaptation is Making its Way to TV

By September 17, 2015

Stephen King is one of the most prolific horror authors in the world. His works have been turned into various films and mini-series, as well as a handful of television series.

Just as an adaptation of his novel, Under The Dome, comes to an end, Dimension Television has announced they’re developing a treatment for one of his novella’s, The Mist. The original story first appeared in 1980’s Dark Forces anthology, (a slightly edited version was included in the 1985 King collection, Skeleton Crew) and tells the story of a small Maine town that is enveloped in a strange mist, when a nearby scientific experiment goes awry.

The story was already adapted into a 2007 film, which is said to be part of the inspiration for the new series. The show is set to be written by Christian Torpe.

Said Bob Weinstein, head of the Weinstein Company and Dimension Films:

The terror and drama in Stephen King‘s novella are so vast that we felt serialized television is the best place to explore them in greater depth. With this show, Christian has created a fascinating band of characters and a story with infinite scares.

It is obviously very early in the development, so there is no additional information available in regards to casting or anything at this time, although it is said that Stephen King has given his blessing to the series.

While Under The Dome kind of went out with a whimper, the first season was intriguing and I think, in that instance, they might have been better off going the mini-series route. The Mist has a very interesting premise and can totally fit in with the survival-in-the-apocalypse vibe that television seems to be rocking these days (Think The Walking Dead!).

However, I’m not completely sold that it will be able to sustain the premise or the suspense over multiple seasons. Everything is going to come down to casting and whether or not they can bring enough dynamic storytelling to the table to keep viewers invested, even after the twist is revealed.

The Mist TV series is currently in development.

So is Dimension Television just a production company then this still has to be sold to a real broadcasting company?
