During Star Wars Celebration Europe in London a few weeks ago, Disney and Lucasfilm officially confirmed that Alden Ehrenreich would be taking on the lead role in their currently untitled Young Han Solo movie, which is set to hit theatres in the early summer of 2018. The news had been a long time coming for fans, and did less to surprise them as much as it made the future plans of the Star Wars universe onscreen a bit more known and concrete.
According to previous reports, the film is set to tell the origin stories of both Han Solo and Chewbacca, his right hand Wookiee, even after we just learned the new canon story behind their meeting in Aftermath: Life Debt, the latest Star Wars book by Chuck Wendig.
The New York Daily News is reporting that the 2018 film may not be the only plans that Disney and Lucasfilm have for Ehrenreich as the Young Han Solo though, with the actor apparently signing a three-film deal with the studio when he signed on for the role, with the possibility of a Han Solo trilogy open to discussion. Their insider says:
“There is a real sense of excitement around the Han Solo movie and its potential. Given that Han’s early adventures do not need to be tied to the Empire, it leaves story lines open with the opportunity to really give fans something different. They can explore new galaxies and crazy creatures and bring in a wide array of new characters.
They feel that his character has the right potential to become a central figure in several movies. They’re keeping things under wraps at the moment, but the deal is that he has signed for at least three movies.”
This doesn’t come as that much of a shock, considering it seems like standard-form for any franchise film actor to sign a deal for multiple movies whenever they work with Disney, as many of the Marvel Cinematic Universe stars have already proven. However, Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jon have written the screenplay for the film, which is set to be directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, and depending on the final quality and success of the spin-off film, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the studio were willing to reevaluate their plans for the Young Han Solo legacy onscreen.
The first Young Han Solo movie is set to hit theatres on May 25th, 2018.
