Oh, action movies, how I love thee. Your disregard for a complex story line makes it so simple to turn your brain off at the end of a long hard day and just have some fun. Your huge explosions make me giggle with glee, while your amazing stunts make me drop my jaw in awe. The characters with hard rock bodies give me something to drool over and tough heroines something to look up to. Action movies, you’ve got the whole package and that’s why you’re awesome.
I am the Action Chick, and I am an action movie freak! So much so that I started my own website focused solely on action news and even wrote a book about them, Action Movie Freak (due out in November, preorder on Amazon now). You’ll be shocked to know not every single person loves action movies. I know, it’s blasphemy! But in my many years of being an action movie freak, I’ve heard it all: some say action movies are shallow, stupid films with no plot, and all they do is act as a way for adrenaline junkies to get their high. Well, my fellow action lovers, they are only half right.
So what if every single action film doesn’t have a well thought out, complex plot. That’s why we have other film genres. Action films are here to entertain with explosions, huge stunts, shootouts, and martial arts showdown. I don’t want to see two people sitting at a table discussing their love life or how to solve the world’s problems. It’s boring. I want to see crap get blown up and the bad guys get some comeuppance – which is why I am an action movie freak and why action movies are fun, exciting, and pure awesome!
In Inferno: The Making of the Expendables, Sylvester Stallone likens action movies to modern day mythology. They’re tales of heroism, of one man or woman trying to do what’s right and kicking ass while doing it. And, while there’s always a place in the world for buffed up studs like Stallone and Statham, there’s also room for other kinds of action stars: the Milla Jovoviches and Cynthia Rothrocks of the world, or even the little Weng Wengs. Action movies aren’t about whether the hero has rock hard abs, it’s about whether they can kick some ass. So join me as I review films and pay homage to the action genre. What are some of your favorite aspects about action movies?
This is the Action Chick, and you’ve just been kicked in the ass!
