Actor Chris Chalk Joins ‘Gotham’ as Lucius Fox

By March 7, 2015

If you’re a fan of Fox’s “Gotham,” but perhaps sick of seeing too many bad people, then this news should cheer you up a bit: one of Bruce Wayne’s most important allies will be coming to the hit Fox show at the end of the season.

According to Deadline, actor Chris Chalk (12 Years a Slave, “Justified”) has been cast as DC Comics character and Wayne Enterprises genius Lucius Fox. Chalk is slated to appear as Fox in the first season’s penultimate 21st episode, and the door is apparently open for him to return in the upcoming second season slated to debut this Fall.

The most famous depiction of Lucius Fox came at the hands of actor Morgan Freeman in The Dark Knight Trilogy.

The most famous depiction of Lucius Fox came at the hands of actor Morgan Freeman in The Dark Knight Trilogy.

First appearing in Batman #307 from 1979, Fox was handpicked by Bruce Wayne to run the day-to-day operations of his company, Wayne Enterprises, because of Fox’s inherent honesty and business acumen. As the CEO of the company, Fox helped transform the conglomerate into the leading business force in Gotham City, becoming a massive job source, as well as balancing the professional and personal books of Bruce Wayne himself.

Recent iterations of the character have depicted Fox as a technical genius, helping to design and build a prototype stealth jet that would later become the Batwing, as well as being a close confidante and ally to Bruce Wayne and Batman, as one of the only people in the company that knows they are one and the same.

The most notable depiction of Fox outside the comics was portrayed by Morgan Freeman in all three of Christopher Nolan’s Batman films: Batman BeginsThe Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises. Much of his depiction in those films has flowed over into the comic book character, who since the films has also been shown to be Batman’s armorer, much like he was in the film trilogy.

Because young Bruce has had to contend with corruption in his family’s company in recent episodes of the show, the presence of Lucius Fox likely means that there may be a diamond in the rough of Wayne Enterprises after all. Fox is certainly one of Bruce Wayne’s and Batman’s most important allies, and it should prove interesting to see just how he’ll be used in the TV show once he makes an appearance.

The 21st episode of “Gotham” is slated to air on Fox on Monday, April 27th. For more on “Gotham,” be sure to check out our weekly reviews of the series right here at GeekNation!
