Okay everyone, the cat’s out of the bag - Star Wars The Force Awakens has been screened for the press and the reviews are in. It’s good. Really, really good. Of course, I’m pretty biased; I host Far, Far Away while also being a massive fan of the brand in general. But after seeing the movie last night, safe to say without much bias actually, the movie is wonderful and can stand on its own as an honest to God blockbuster that delivers on all levels.  So says AFI.

The American Film Institute has finally revealed its list of the Top 10 films and TV shows of 2015 and Star Wars The Force Awakens is on that list. What I find even more awesome, is that AFI waited to tally their votes until their members could see it and vote accordingly. I love that they wanted to wait – just in case TFA was good. Needless to say I’m thrilled people are liking it. Star Wars fan or not, it’s wonderful to see a legit film association recognize a good movie.

And it doesn’t stop there – here now are their picks for the Top 10 Movies of 2015!

The Big Short

Bridge of Spies

Inside Out

Mad Max: Fury Road

The Martian

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Straight Outta Compton

That’s a damn fine list there… One that looks to be very close to my own (pending more time to hit the movies and see Room and Spotlight).

Here now are the Top 10 TV programs of 2015:

The Americans

Better Call Saul

Game of Thrones

Master of None

Mr. Robot

AFI Special Award

Mad Men

However, on the TV side of things for me, I’m missing out on a lot of great shows. But my tastes hew very close to AFI’s taste (look at their movie list) so I will now leave you so I can get my DVR all programed for the upcoming new year.

For everyone out there in the Nation, what do you think of both lists? Happy to see Star Wars in there? Relieved that it’s getting good reviews? Did they miss anything in general?

I really don’t quite get all the Bridge of Spies love…it’s a perfectly fine movie, but outside of Mark Rylance’s performance and the musical score, I don’t think it’s anything all that special…and certainly not deserving of a Top Ten spot (at least, not my top ten!)…especially considering the fact that AFI left off The Revenant, Ex Machina and The Hateful Eight (not to mention Brooklyn, The Danish Girl, and Youth). Super excited for Spotlight and Inside Out, though (Room too – such a thoughtful and beautiful little film) – my favorite films of the year!
