Who would’ve thought following Captain America: The First Avenger, that Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter would have become such an integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
After making audiences love her in the first film, the character has since gone on to have appearances in several of the other MCU films including The Winter Soldier and Ant-Man. However, after making a brief appearance during a season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the character went on to be the central focus of her own spin-off series in Agent Carter. The show was set in 1940s New York City, and followed Peggy as she looked to recover from the loss of Steve Rogers and battle against the gender prejudices in the work force at the time.
I personally loved the series and its pulpy, period drama, and going into next year’s sophomore season of the series too, I look forward to seeing where our favorite badass agent is planning on going next.
Looks like we won’t have to wait much longer to find out too as ABC has officially announced that season 2 of Agent Carter will premiere on Tuesday, January 5th at 9/8c with a special two-hour premiere. The series will feature the return of Hayley Atwell as the title character, along with Wynn Everett as Whitney Frost (a.k.a. Madame Masque), James D’Arcy as Edwin Jarvis, Enver Gjokaj as Daniel Sousa (now an SSR chief), Chad Michael Murray as Chief Jack Thompson, Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark, Bridget Regan as Dottie Underwood, Ken Marino as crime boss Joseph Manfredi, Lotte Verbeek as Ana Jarvis, in addition to Kurtwood Smith, Reggie Austin, and Currie Graham.
The new season finds Peggy moving out of her NYC based first season though, as she ventures into the bright and sunny Los Angeles, California. Check out the first official image from the season below, as Peggy exchanges her signature red hat for some new red shades:
Here is the official synopsis for Agent Carter season 2 as well:
“’Marvel’s Agent Carter’ returns for a second season of adventure and intrigue, starring Hayley Atwell in the titular role of the unstoppable agent for the SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve). Dedicated to the fight against new Atomic Age threats in the wake of World War II, Peggy must now journey from New York City to Los Angeles for her most dangerous assignment yet. But even as she discovers new friends, a new home – and perhaps even a new love – she’s about to find out that the bright lights of the post-war Hollywood mask a more sinister threat to everyone she is sworn to protect.”
It is interesting to wonder if Peggy would have become such a beloved character had Atwell not initially been cast as her, as the actress has become a favorite amongst Marvel fans over the past few years, bringing a charm and edge to Peggy that I don’t think many other actresses could have. As we move closer and closer to filling in the gaps in Peggy’s past though, including the founding of S.H.I.E.L.D. and meeting her future husband, it’ll be interesting to see how the showrunners and creative team are planning on spreading this story out, and just how much more we can expect to see of the character after this upcoming season.
Personally, after witnessing how spectacularly they depicted 1940s New York City in the first season though, I’m just looking forward to seeing how they’re creating the Golden Age of Hollywood onscreen around Peggy this time around, and what kind of pulpy adventures we might be in store for.
Agent Carter season 2 will premiere on ABC on Tuesday, January 5th.
