AMC Orders Pilot Episode for ‘Preacher’

By December 4, 2014

AMC is looking to the medium of comic books once again to provide a new hit series for their network, as Deadline reports that they have officially ordered a pilot episode based on the DC/Vertigo Comics series Preacher, putting the rumors to rest. The series, by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon, revolves around small town preacher Jesse Custer, who sets out on a journey to literally find God after a life-changing experience, and discovers that he has the ability to compel anyone to do anything he wishes as long as they can comprehend his words.

Developed for television by Seth Rogen and his collaborator Evan Goldberg, the pilot will be directed by the duo from a script by writer and potential showrunner Sam Catlin (“Breaking Bad”). Joel Stillerman, AMC’s executive vice president of original programming, released a statement to Deadline on the development of the pilot. It reads,

Every once in a while you find a project where all the elements line up beautifully. With “Preacher,” it starts with a bold, compelling, and thought-provoking comic book series from Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon and a whole lot of fans who already know Jesse Custer, Cassidy, and Tulip. Add to that the passionate and talented Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin, an incredible producing team in Neal Moritz, the Original Film team and our good friends at Sony Pictures Television, and we have everything we need to be VERY excited to move forward on “Preacher.”

Stillerman’s sentiments about Rogen and Goldberg’s enthusiasm was echoed by the duo themselves, who emphasize their love of the comic book series in their own joint statement: “Preacher has been our favorite comic since it first came out. Garth Ennis is one of our idols and it’s an incredible honor to be working on this. We promise we won’t make too many dick jokes and ruin it.”
