An Entire Movie Theater Is Up For Grabs For The Best 250 Word Essay

By January 3, 2016

It’s always been my lifelong dream to have enough money so that I could own my own movie theater. Problem is I want to be so rich I could lose money on it. I want to be able to sell popcorn and soda for a dollar and give people the greatest, cheapest movie theater experience of their lives. That’s not just money. I need screw you money for that venture. So with that, this contest isn’t for me. But you may be interested!

A twin screen 100 year old live-in movie theater in Houlton, Maine called Temple Theater is up for grabs by its owner Mike Hurley to the best submitted 250 word essay. According to Hurley, the winning essay will be judged on

writing structure, content, quality of expression (and) creativity

This theater is no money pit, either. Hurley said he did a little better than breaking even himself.

This is an opportunity to get into the business debt-free and become the entertainment hub of a wonderfully supportive region

There is kind-of a catch, however.

Hurley says that he listed the entire three story building including the theater, office space, parking and Masonic lodge for $350,000 and wasn’t able to secure a buyer. He’s asking for a $100 entry fee to enter the contest and will only choose a winner if he receives 3,500 submissions before the January 31st deadline. I’m not very good at math but I’ll bet you a well written 250 word essay that adds up to $350,000. That’s one smart fella.

He says he only has several thousand submissions currently but is hopeful with some exposure (Even CNN has covered the story) he’ll get what he needs to ride off into the sunset. He will ofcourse, return everyone’s $100 if he doesn’t receive enough submissions.  There’s also $25,000 up for grabs just to sweeten the pot.

What do you think GeekNation? Is it worth your time and money to give it a shot? Here’s the video about it below if you need some extra incentive. Just remember who sent you if you win. Hook me up with some $1 popcorn someday.

Mike Holtz is just a guy looking for any excuse to talk movies and needs to be able to give people a legitimate reason to spend what they spend on popcorn each month. The Dad to a superhero little girl with another on the way, Mike's also written for a few cool websites and talked for a few more. Also, Mike cries like a school girl every time he watches 'Rocky.'
