Andy Serkis Will Play a Character in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’

By July 2, 2014

Last week, there was a bit of confusion about whether or not actor Andy Serkis would actually be appearing on screen in Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron because of a vague Q&A published in Variety that contained the following back and forth:

You’re involved with both “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Star Wars Episode VII.”

The Imaginarium is the performance capture consultant, and I’m playing a role (in both films). On ‘The Avengers,’ I’ve been working closely with Mark Ruffalo.

Will we actually see your face?

I’m not at liberty to mention.

The Imaginarium is Serkis’ consulting company, which offers advice and services to productions utilizing performance capture technology. So when he said, “I’m playing a role,” that could easily have simply meant that he was providing consulting work behind the scenes. That was all the information we had to go on at the time, and I figured clarification would follow soon after. Drew McWeeny at Hitfix reached out to his inside sources on the set of Age of Ultron, who confirmed that Serkis “is only playing one character in the film, and that the nature of that role is still meant to be a secret.”

So that gives us a better look at the bigger picture here. Serkis won’t be portraying an army of Chitauri warriors in motion capture suits, because he’ll only be playing one character. But Hitfix’s sources also revealed that the actor is not playing any of the already announced characters. That still doesn’t answer the question of whether or not we’ll see the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes star playing a human role in the movie or if he’ll be in unrecognizable as some sort of performance captured alien, but at least we know that he will appear on screen in some capacity.

Who do you think Serkis will portray in Avengers: Age of Ultron?
