Anna Kendrick Teams with Aubrey Plaza for Zombie Romantic Comedy ‘Life After Beth’

By July 21, 2013

Fans of Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World know that the lovely and talented comedic duo of Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza have shared the screen once before, but now they’re poised to do it once again.

According to Deadline, Kendrick, “SNL” alum Molly Shannon, and Cheryl Hines are joining Plaza, John C. Reilly, and Chronicle star Dane DeHaan in Life After Beth, a zombie film written and directed by rookie filmmaker Jeff Baena (who co-wrote I Heart Huckabees). The story follows Zach (DeHaan), a man who is in mourning over the death of his girlfriend Beth (Plaza.) But since zombies are all the rage right now, Beth doesn’t stay dead for long.

Other details are being kept close to the vest on this one, but we’re hoping that Kendrick (who earned an Academy Award nomination for her work in Up in the Air and generally seems like a wonderful person) will play a fellow zombie so she and Plaza can get into some wacky undead antics together. Or maybe she could be the straight woman who doesn’t care that her former friend is now a zombie. The possibilities are, well, not quite endless, but thinking about these two female comedy forces together again is certainly appealing. Plaza’s always terrific on “Parks and Recreation” and proved she could lead a film with the superb indie Safety Not Guaranteed last year.

Toss in the up-and-coming DeHaan (who plays Harry Osborne in The Amazing Spider-Man 2) and comedy vets like Shannon and Reilly, and this could end up being a great indie zombie comedy, that takes a page from The Kings of Summer’s playbook, booking excellent comedic actors in almost all of its supporting roles to great success. Life After Beth has already started filming in Los Angeles, so we’ll keep you posted if any other big players join the already-stellar cast.
