Anthony and Joe Russo Returning to Direct Marvel’s ‘Captain America 3’

Looks like we may have been right when we put Captain America: The Winter Soldier on our list of movies that might not suck this year. The movie’s been getting a bunch of great word of mouth from insiders who have seen cuts of it already, and this latest announcement seems to indicate that Marvel certainly doesn’t think it sucks, either. Variety says The Winter Soldier directors Anthony and Joe Russo are in early talks to come back to direct Captain America 3 for Marvel Studios.

The trade points out that Marvel Studios usually waits until a film’s opening weekend before making a decision about who will helm its sequel, but the studio reportedly wants the Russo brothers to be involved in the development of the storyline for Cap 3, so they’re already in discussions about the future of the franchise even though no contracts have been signed yet. (Both parties will likely wait until the April 4th release date of The Winter Soldier before signing on the dotted line.) Hopefully this early development means they can get started on preproduction quickly and have plenty of time to knock out a great script that lives up to the level of expectations Marvel Studios has set for its movies.

The Russo Brothers will join Jon Favreau and Joss Whedon as the only filmmakers to be brought back to direct a sequel to their own movie in the Marvel universe. (Favreau directed Iron Man 1 & 2, and Whedon obviously directed The Avengers and has Age of Ultron coming up.) From what we’ve heard so far, these dudes have already knocked The Winter Soldier out of the park, so we’re excited to see them keep the creative juices flowing and tell more stories about Captain America in the years to come. (I’m guessing Cap 3 will hit theaters in 2017.)
