Arnold Schwarzenegger Brings the Terminator to ‘WWE 2K16′

By July 27, 2015

Well now, this is a strange pairing.

This October, 2K Sports will release WWE 2K16 for old and new generation consoles, following in the yearly tradition of releasing the latest in the pro wrestling simulator based on the performers and situations of World Wrestling Entertainment. In a bit of a twist, though, 2K has announced that customers who pre-order the game will have the chance to play as a very unexpected in-ring competitor: the Terminator.

In an official press release, 2K has revealed that Arnold Schwarzenegger — himself a WWE Hall of Famer from the class of 2015 — will be providing the likeness and voice of his timeless cybernetic alter-ego as he appeared in both James Cameron’s original 1984 film The Terminator, and its 1991 follow-up Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The press release reads,

2K today announced the debut of 2015 WWE Hall of Fame inductee and global action film icon Arnold Schwarzenegger in WWE 2K16, the forthcoming release in the flagship WWE franchise. Best known for his acting, bodybuilding and political endeavors, Schwarzenegger, a longtime WWE fan and WWE Hall of Famer, will expand his relationship with WWE through WWE 2K16 with two playable characters – T-800 from The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day films. The playable characters will be available for those who pre-order the game at participating retailers for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 computer entertainment systems, as well as Xbox One and Xbox 360.

This will mark the first time in the history of the WWE video game franchise that a character from a movie will be playable in the wrestling simulator series, going as far back as the original WWF SmackDown! game released on the original PlayStation in 2000. Oddly enough, the release of WWE 2K16 won’t be the first time that the wrestling organization and the Terminator franchise have crossed paths, as the Terminator was present during the ring entrance of Triple H at this past year’s WrestleMania 31 in Santa Clara, California. There, Triple H was announced by a video of Schwarzenegger in-character, before he came to the ring in a costume inspired by the sci-fi film series.

The WWE 2K game series made its debut on new-gen consoles with last year’s game, WWE 2K15. In our review, we felt it promised strong things for future installments, but lacked in some important content areas.

You can see the released trailer for the Terminator pre-order content below, where Schwarzenegger recreates the opening scene of Terminator 2. In this version, the bar flies have been recast as some current WWE performers.

WWE 2K16 will be available on October 27th on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. For more on the game as it takes shape, check back with GeekNation closer to launch.
