Update: 20th Century Fox has denied this report. As always, we’ll see how everything plays out and keep you in the loop. Original article follows.
Between breaking diving records in his submersible and working with Planetary Resources to develop technology to mine asteroids, director James Cameron has been preparing to return to the world of Pandora for more Avatar sequels. He recently set writers to pen the three sequels (which he plans to film at the same time), and now the folks at Latino-Review claim to have discovered who will play the big bad in the next in Cameron’s sci-fi saga.
According to their “top level sources,” Arnold Schwarzenegger will reteam with his The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and True Lies director in the new movie. The story will reportedly pick up after the events of the first film, following Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) after he transferred his consciousness into his Na’vi avatar and hooks up with Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). But more human colonizers are on the way, after their forces were unbelievably defeated at the end of the original, and Arnold is said to be playing a general leading the charge.
Two of Schwarzenegger’s best films are T2 and True Lies, so Cameron can clearly pull a decent performance out of him. Plus, if Stephen Lang’s over the top machismo as the villain in the first movie was any indication, it doesn’t appear that the director is looking for subtlety; that plays right into Arnie’s wheelhouse. He’d be a formidable foe for Jake and Neytiri to face off against, and it might actually give his comeback a big boost in the process – something he sorely needs since he hasn’t exactly lit up the box office since his return to the world of film.
Would seeing Arnold as the villain in this sequel make you more or less likely to see the movie? Or, since it’s the sequel to the highest grossing film of all time, are you going to see the sequel regardless of who’s in it? Let us know below.
