To say that Assassin’s Creed has had its share of ups and downs over the years is a bit of an understatement. The film has basically been in development hell since late 2011. In fact, it was originally supposed to be released on May 22, 2015. So, yeah, as we know, that didn’t happen.
Through it all, star Michael Fassbender has been attached, which is probably the main reason that the whole project hasn’t been scrapped by now. But, the production has a director on Justin Kurzel and another official release date, this time December 21, 2016.
According to Fassbender back in May, production on the film was supposed to begin on August 31st, although I’m not sure that’s the case as the studio seems to still be in the process of rounding out the cast. Variety is reporting that Jeremy Irons and Brendan Gleeson have now been added to the film.
Irons, who will be fresh off his turn as Alfred in next year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice is set to play Marion Cotillard’s father in the film, while Gleeson will play the father of Michael Fassbender’s Callum Lynch.
It’s never a bad thing to hire talent, and the way that this cast is rounding out, makes me excited for this film. Previous video game adaptations have left a lot to be desired, but I’ve got to say, I think we may be heading for a number of interesting entries in the genre. Between this and Duncan Jones’ Warcraft, I have hope that we’re finally going to get a couple of great adaptations. Which would be great, because there are plenty of games out there that would make some pretty spectacular films, if only given the chance.
