‘Assassin’s Creed’ Image Reveals First Look at Michael Fassbender in Costume

By August 27, 2015

Video game movies have been notoriously bad every time they’ve been made. It just seems like Hollywood is incapable of making a good video game adaptation at this point, whether it be the Tomb Raider films with Angelina Jolie, the atrocious Super Mario Bros. movie, or even the recent Hitman: Agent 47 – the film industry just cannot seem to crack the code. However, there are a number of projects set to be released within the next few years that have given at least some hope to gamers all over the world that they might finally see a good adaptation of some of their favorite games.

One of the biggest and most interesting game adaptations in the works right now though, is easily, Assassin’s Creed. The film has been stuck in development hell the past few years or so, despite having Michael Fassbender attached to star in the lead role from the beginning. However, after gaining Macbeth director Justin Kurzel and two new cast members in Michael K. Williams and Marion Cotillard, it looks like things might finally be looking up for Assassin’s Creed.

The film is set to begin shooting next week, and to likely avoid any awful set photos from leaking online and spoiling too much, the first official image of Michael Fassbender in the iconic Assassins costume has been revealed online (via Yahoo! Movies). Check out the image below:

Assassin3Fassbender will be playing Callum Lynch in the film, a completely new character created only for the movie, who discovers that he is a descendant of a secret society of assassins equipped with genetic memories from his 15th century ancestor. With these memories, Callum will train and hone his Assassin skills and techniques in his fight against the contemporary Knights Templar.

While the character is completely new, Fassbender looks incredibly similar to some of the other Assassins characters from the video games, with the iconic hidden blades on both of his wrists and the Assassins hood draped over his head. Out of everything that has been coming out about this movie though, Michael Fassbender being the lead has always been a comforting reminder that this film has the potential to not only be the best video game films ever, but also one of the coolest medieval films to come out in recent memory.

After working with Justin Kurzel and Marion Cotillard on this year’s Macbeth – which has been receiving critical acclaim ever since it’s premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this year – it looks like fans of the AC franchise might finally be able to get excited for this film. I mean, just look at that photo because if that doesn’t make you at least cautiously optimistic for this project, then I don’t know what will.

Assassin’s Creed is set to hit theatres on December 21st, 2016.
