Ava DuVernay Offered ‘Wrinkle in Time’ & Sci-Fi Thriller Starring Lupita Nyong’o

By February 8, 2016

Ava DuVernay is quickly becoming one of my favorite people in Hollywood. Favorite people. Not that she shouldn’t quit her day job – okay she quit her day job before as a publicist and made Selma as a director so if she were to quit her new day job, no telling how far she’ll go.

Because Ava DuVernay is talented (See Selma); but she is also a strong minded, vocal woman that is forever hoping to change the industry from the inside out. And I have a lot of respect for that. On top of her skills, she is honest and will often put people in their place – mostly on Twitter. So, yeah. Consider me interested in Deadline’s report that the director is up for two big Sci-Fi movies – one a potential franchise, the other a damned interesting sounding script written by Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly (Jurassic World, Star Wars Episode IX) entitled Intelligent Life I’m thrilled to see she is being taken seriously and being offered movies like this.

The first, an adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time, is about a young girl whose government scientist father goes missing after working on a mysterious project; is the first novel from a series and is the potential franchise starter I mentioned from Disney. The adaptation was written by Frozen co-writer/co-director Jennifer Lee. The second, Intelligent Life, is “about a U.N worker in a department designed to represent mankind if there was ever contact with aliens, who falls for a mysterious woman who turns out to be an alien” (via Collider).

If I could be given studio head for a day and make a case for either of these – I’d go with the script that will be produced by Amblin. So Intelligent Life is my pick. To have DuVernay’s sensibilities and style behind an interesting sounding, original story, has me the most excited. Plus, Amblin, the studio behind E.T. Yes, please.

And let’s add more to the Intelligent Life idea – The Hollywood Reporter is now reporting that actress Lupita Nyong’o is now in negotiations to take on a unspecified role. Also, they’re confirming DuVernay’s involvement as well as confirming she can do both projects if schedules line up.

Nyong’o is in negotiations, while DuVernay is expected to receive an offer to direct in the next 24 hours. The director, who helmed the Martin Luther King biopic Selma, is also fielding an offer from Disney to adapt A Wrinkle in Time, the children book classic by Madelein L’Engle. There is no conflict between the two projects so the director could end up doing both.

In the end, we really don’t know exactly which one she’ll take – or even if she is thinking both at this point. She was in the mix for Black Panther way back when but opted to say no instead. Plus, I’ve heard rumblings that Disney is REALLY wanting to work with her so either or both could be HUGE for her.

Most exciting too is the fact that DuVernay is being rumored for two BIG BUDGET movies from a studio. This, black or not, female or not, is an exciting step in the right direction for both women directors and directors of color. I know we are walking the line right now between #OscarsSoWhite and looking progressive in an industry that has been anything but as of late – but no matter how you look at it, DuVernay is at the center of it and (when) it finally does happen then it will be because of her talent.

Now, what about Star Wars? As a completely biased fan of the franchise, a little part of me is hoping the Wrinkle gig is just a smoke-screen by Disney and she is actually in the mix for a Star Wars movie. Probably a spin-off. Because all I am thinking about, really, is a different kind of Star Wars movie. I get nerd chills just thinking about it. It’s time for a woman director to be appointed in the Star Wars Universe. But that’s a story for another time.
