This year, Netflix finally dove into creating straight-up comedy series for their subscribers to enjoy with “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” and the streaming service is marching onward with another original series.
THR reports Netflix is developing an untitled new comedy series from comedian Aziz Ansari and his “Parks & Recreation” co-creator and executive producer Mike Schur and co-executive producer Alan Yang. Ansari will also star in the series, and there’s a pretty great supporting cast as well.
Though we don’t know for sure what the series is about, it’s rumored to be loosely based on Ansari’s life, and the cast will feature Jon Benjamin (“Bob’s Burgers”), Lena Waithe (“The Comeback”), Eric Wareheim (“Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!”), Noel Wells (“Saturday Night Live”) and Kelvin Yu (a writer on “Bob’s Burgers”).
As of now, the series has an order for 10 half-hour episodes for the first season, but if the show turns out to be a hit like “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” then it will likely get more. Netflix is pretty quick to renew their series, as evidenced by the recent order for a second season of “Daredevil.”
Schur’s work speaks for itself since he comes from writing on “Saturday Night Live” before his hit series “Parks & Recreation” took off, having just ended a couple months ago after a successful, hilarious seven season run. He also worked on “The Office” (where he also played Dwight’s cousin Mose), and currently has “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” on the air, so he’s doing pretty well.
Ansari already had a solid relationship with Netflix since his stand-up special “Buried Alive” debuted exclusively on the streaming service, and “Parks & Recreation” helped turn him into a very well-known name. And if he’s able to deliver a quality show that’s as funny as his stand-up specials, then we should be in for a special treat.
