With award season on the horizon, studios will soon be rolling out their annual offering of prestige pictures in hopes of catching the attention of voters from various guilds, critic groups and of course, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. There’s no shortage of films to look forward to, but one of my most anticipated releases of the season isn’t likely to find itself taking home any golden statues: it’s another direct-to-video animated feature from DC Comic and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders.
An homage to the beloved Batman television series from the 1960s, the film promises the same type of campy humor that made the original show such a classic – and as a bonus, the producers have tapped Adam West, Burt Ward and Julie Newmar to provide the voices of the characters they made famous. Originally planned for a limited VOD run followed by a home video release, Fathom Events has stepped in to give fans the change to see Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders on the big screen in a special one-night-only event.
If that sounds familiar, it’s because Batman: The Killing Joke was given similar treatment back in July, and by all accounts was a huge success for both Fathom and Warner Bros. And while this release may not garner the same level of attention as its predecessor, it’s still a great opportunity for die-hard fans to see their heroes return to the big screen, and should make for a bold contrast to this year’s other cinematic Batman offerings.
Here’s the official synopsis:
It’s back to the 1960s as Batman and Robin spring into action when Gotham City is threatened by a quartet of Batman’s most fiendish foes – Penguin, The Joker, Riddler and Catwoman. The four Super-Villains have combined their wicked talents to hatch a plot so nefarious that the Dynamic Duo will need to go to outer space (and back) to foil their arch enemies and restore order in Gotham City. It’s a truly fantastic adventure that will pit good against evil, good against good, evil against evil … and feature two words that exponentially raise the stakes for both sides: Replicator Ray. Holy Multiplication Tables!
Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders will air in theaters for three exclusive showings on Monday, October 10 at 2:00 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. local time. According to Fathom’s website, fans will be treated to “a special introduction plus a never-before-seen documentary, Those Dastardly Desperados,” which explores how villains such as The Joker, Penguin and Catwoman have become mainstays of pop culture.
Tickets can be purchased via the Fathom Events website, but for those of you who can’t make it out to the theater, don’t worry: Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders will be hitting VOD on October 11, with a Blu-Ray release following on November 1.
