Ever since a swarm of what look to be Parademons were spotted in the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailers, fans have been eagerly wondering and theorizing about the possible existence of Darkseid, one of DC’s most iconic and powerful villains, in the Cinematic Universe. After the reveal of Doomsday in the last trailer though, and the constant hints from director Zack Snyder about even more things to come, the question has become more focused on whether or not we even want anymore iconic characters or references packed into the film’s already stuffed run time.
Well, either way, it looks like Darkseid is coming, and that dream sequence we’ve been hearing so much about? It may very well come from the ruler of Apokolips himself, which if I’m being honest, is pretty cool.
Several scans from the newest Batman v Superman issue of Empire have made their way online recently, with one in specific featuring Ben Affleck’s Batman standing in that dystopian-esque desert environment we’ve seen so much of, staring at an Omega sign branded into the dry earth. If this doesn’t come as confirmation that the seed for Darkseid is already being planted, then I don’t know what does. About the only thing missing is the villain himself waving goodbye to the Dark Knight.
We can likely also take this as confirmation that the nightmare sequence teased in the previous trailers is likely brought on by Darkseid himself, probably in order to stoke the flames of war between the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel. Now, that’s mostly just me speculating, but I can’t imagine any other reason that the Omega symbol would be featured in the same sequence as the likely parademons, without Darkseid being involved in its creation. Considering how beloved of a villain Darkseid is too, the idea of him possibly being the Thanos of the DC Universe, pulling the strings from behind-the-scenes, could make for an even more impressive overarching narrative and storyline. If done right.
Now, could you do me a favor DC, and stop releasing so many images and trailers for this movie already? Everyone in the world knows it’s coming out. You’re going to make a lot of money, we get it. So why don’t you just stick with the TV spots and trailers you’ve already made. Cool? Cool.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is set to hit theatres on March 25th.
