Up until this point, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has been surrounded (possibly unfairly) in criticism for almost three years now. We’re only a few more weeks away from the film’s theatrical release later this month though, and whether you’re excited for it or not, Batman v Superman is on its way, and it promises to be one of the biggest and most important superhero movies ever made.
Introducing Ben Affleck’s Batman onto the big screen for the first time, as well as Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, and a slew of other Justice League members, Batman v Superman touts enough iconic names to warrant some large, healthy numbers throughout its theatrical run, and finally, the projected numbers are in.
Currently the film is projected to make $140 million domestic in its opening weekend from March 25th – March 27th according to insiders with access to the pre-release surveys and reports, with the possibility to make more, which should rank it at least among the the top 10 domestic box office openings in comic book movie history. Although, WB insiders are turning out some more conservative reports with a possible $110 million opening on the lower-side of things.
After Deadpool made box office history last month with a $132.4 million opening over its three-day President’s Day weekend, it will be interesting to see if not only Dawn of Justice can surpass the R-rated superhero action comedy, but how much the film might beat it by. Its PG-13 rating opens it up to a larger demographic, though its longer run time does decrease the number of showings it can have throughout the night and day.
Currently Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games holds the March record for highest-grossing opening weekend with $152.5 million, and while Batman v Superman is projected to make less than that, if word-of-mouth is positive, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s able to surpass the YA adaptation’s opening numbers. At this rate though, the film should speed past $300 million in its first weekend fairly easily, which for a movie featuring three of the most iconic comic book characters of all time, should be expected.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will open on March 25th.
