‘Battlestar Galactica’ Star Edward James Olmos Joining ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’

This superior season of Marvel’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” has already had a fair share of guest stars from Lucy Lawless to Adrianne Palicki, not to mention recurring guest star Patton Oswalt. Now, another new face is headed to the series that ties into Marvel’s cinematic universe.

Marvel has announced that “Battlestar Galactica” star Edward James Olmos has signed on for a role on the show as Robert Gonzales. And if there’s any comic book fans who can’t seem to recall that name from Marvel mythology, that’s because he’s not found in the comics. However, the press release says he will have “massive repercussions for Director Coulson and his team.”

Does that mean Olmos will be playing a villain? Or is he someone with his own motivations that just happens to clash with that of S.H.I.E.L.D.? Unfortunately, we won’t find out until the spring, because “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is on a break while the limited series “Agent Carter” plays out on ABC right now.

On the new casting, Jeph Loeb, executive Producer and Head of Marvel Television, says, “Edward James Olmos brings an amazing gravitas to any role he inhabits, something we knew we needed for Robert Gonzales. When Olmos first appears on our series, everyone will have to take notice–including our favorite Agents.”

We’re just wondering if the events of “Agent Carter” will introduce some new plot points and historical events that will come into play in the second half of the season of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” There are some interesting theories going around about how Leviathan from “Agent Carter” could end up being a plot point that returns in “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” but we still have to see what happens back in the 40s with the beginning of the eventually corrupt agency.

And let’s not forget that the midseason finale found Skye discovering that she’s likely an Inhuman, which seems to indicate that “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” might end up being more important to the cinematic universe than it’s been so far, and that’s exactly what the show needs.

The second season of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” will return on March 3rd.
