Baz Luhrmann In Talks To Direct Elvis Biopic

Elvis Presley is known for being not only a cultural icon, he’s also one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century, spanning multiple music genres (pop, blues and gospel) and is the best-selling solo artist in the history of recorded music. With combined album sales of around 600 million units worldwide, Presley was nominated for 14 Grammys (winning three) as well as the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at age 36 and inducted into multiple music halls of fame before his death in 1977 at age 42.

Over the years, many, MANY biopics have been made about Presley…and now it seems Baz Luhrmann is next in line to tell the tale of The King of Rock n’ Roll.

According to The Wrap, Luhrmann’s currently in talks with Warner Bros. to direct the script about The King’s life currently being written by Kelly Marcel (Saving Mr Banks, 50 Shades Of Grey); what part of his life, however, is still up in the air. But as Warner Bros. has secured the rights to “all musical components in Presley’s catalog,” and if the Luhrmann deal goes through – we could see something magical on a grand scale like we have in his past films like William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge and of course, the multiple Oscar-winning The Great Gatsby.

Luhrmann is known for the use of bright colors and sweeping epics, so I’m interested to see how this is gonna pan out (as Presley wore a LOT of black) but if he does get the gig, I hope he’s very, VERY careful with the source material. Elvis fans are not ones to be messed with and considering 80,000 people alone lined the streets during his funeral procession to his final resting place with those around the world watching on TV, Luhrmann could find himself in a bit of trouble if he besmirches the legacy of this American rock n’ roll icon.

On the plus side, the musical numbers will be AWESOME…remember the Can Can?

Admittedly, I’m both hesitant and excited at the same time…what about you?

Stay tuned.
