If you’ve been curious about what upcoming drama Ripper Street looks like, you’re in luck – BBC America’s gone and given a “street preview” of the first three minutes via YouTube!
Ripper Street stars Matthew Macfayden (Spooks, Pride and Prejudice), Jerome Flynn (Game Of Thrones) and Adam Rothenberg (The Ex-List) as three police officers who find themselves dealing with a possible return of a monster (or even worse, a “fan” who wants to continue The Ripper’s “work”) six months after the last Ripper victim was found.
But first, a very quick history lesson on the very real man this fictional show is wrapped around…
Jack The Ripper brutalized and savagely murdered five prostitutes in an area of London known as Whitechapel from August to November of 1888 and to this day, has NEVER been identified (although there are PLENTY of conspiracies as to his identity). Due to the fact that these murders have never been solved and the public’s fascination-at-large with who he was and why he did it, The Ripper’s legend remains intact courtesy of the hundreds of books, films, TV shows, websites, scholarly journals and beyond; the term “ripperology” relates to the study and analysis of the Ripper murders.
According to the show’s description (courtesy of their Wikipedia), this eight-episode series takes the Jack The Ripper concept and gives it a wee tweak.
“In April 1889, six months since the last Jack the Ripper killing, H Division is responsible for policing one and a quarter square miles of East London, a district with a population of 67,000 poor and dispossessed. The men of H Division had hunted Jack the Ripper and failed to find him. When more women are murdered on the streets of Whitechapel, the police begin to wonder if the killer has returned.
Adam Rothenberg, Matthew Macfayden and Jerome Flynn
Among the factories, rookeries, chop shops, brothels and pubs, Detective Inspector Edmund Reid (Macfayden) and Detective Sergeant Bennett Drake (Flynn) team with US Army surgeon and former Pinkerson detective Captain Homer Jackson (Rothenberg) to investigate the killings.”
Ready to trod the stones of Ripper Street?
Holy balls, I am so in…
