A lot of fans have high hopes for the Justin Lin (Fast and Furious) helmed Star Trek Beyond movie, especially since Trekkers are looking forward to celebrating the 50th anniversary. Though I am a bit in the minority, having loved both the rebooted, 2009 Trek and its sequel, Into Darkness, I do know that the two movies, especially the second, left hard-core fans a bit upset. They felt the movies didn’t truly encapsulate the sense of exploratory wonder inherent in the original series. For lack of a better term, the movies were more Star Wars than Star Trek.
The filmmakers, after a lengthy process getting the movie off the ground what with JJ leaving for a galaxy far, far away and Roberto Orci unceremoniously leaving the project (see: fired), seem to have listened to the cries from the fans. Entertainment Tonight has an exclusive look behind the scenes in this video and the topic of honoring what came before, especially in observance of the 50th anniversary, came about.
What gets me most excited for this movie in particular is Simon Pegg. Not only is he returning to the role of Scotty, but he is also one of the writers for the movie! If that doesn’t get you excited, I don’t know what will.
But seriously, everyone involved seems to know they have some big shoes to fill and want, more than anything, is to give the fans the best Trek film ever. The history of the movies that came before, and especially the TV series, is ever present in all the promotions here - from the actors to the writers – everyone involved seems hell bent on making this a special movie.
Star Trek Beyond comes to theatres July 22nd, 2016.
