Ben Affleck Bootlegs His Way to Underworld Royalty in ‘Live By Night’ Trailer

By September 10, 2016

As an Oscar-winning writer and a critically acclaimed director whose last effort won the 2012 Academy Award for Best Picture, Ben Affleck has spent more time in front of the camera over the past few years than behind it. He portrayed a charismatic gambler and entrepreneur in Runner Runner, a murder suspect in the gripping thriller Gone Girl, and of course, he donned the iconic cape and cowl for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

But Affleck is still a filmmaker at heart, and somewhere amid all those other projects he found time to write and direct Live By Night, an adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel that follows the son of a Boston police officer who climbs the ladder of the criminal underworld during the Prohibition era. With an early 2017 release on the horizon, Warner Bros. has just dropped the first trailer for the film, and we’ve got it right here.

This isn’t the first time in recent years that we’ve seen a big-screen tale about bootlegging: John Hillcoat’s Lawless, starring Tom Hardy and Shia LeBeouf, opened in 2012. But whereas that film focused on the exploits of a family trying to make ends meet, Live By Night seems to more inspired by Scarface or The Godfather, charting the rise of a single man as he becomes one of the most notorious gangsters of the era. And aside from Affleck’s suit looking like it was stolen from the wardrobe department on the set of Dick Tracy, the rest of this looks solid.

With a supporting cast that includes Zoe Saldana, Elle Fanning, Sienna Miller, Brendan Gleeson, Scott Eastwood, Chris Cooper, Titus Welliver, Anthony Michael Hall, and Chris Messina, Live By Night is expected to receive an awards-qualifying limited release sometime in December – although this has not yet been confirmed by Warner Bros.

But if you don’t live in New York or Los Angeles, don’t worry, you won’t have to wait too much longer: Live By Night should be in theaters everywhere beginning January 13, 2017.
