The Jason Bourne franchise is the closest thing that the U.S. has gotten to their own James Bond. Although the tones are pretty different, and the characters are nearly complete opposites — the Bourne franchise itself is one of the only other spy franchises to capture the same cool, bad ass tone that the Bond films have perfected over the past fifty-plus years.
While the last installment in the Bourne franchise, The Bourne Legacy, disappointed not only die-hard Bourne fans, but also most audiences — the next installment in the franchise is set to bring both Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass back to the series, giving fans more than enough reasons to look forward to the film.
According to a new report by Variety, it looks like actor Tommy Lee Jones will officially be joining the cast of the film as well. For right now, it is unknown who he will be playing, or what his role will be in the film’s story, but the report does state it is possible he could be playing yet another high-ranking CIA officer. Production on the film is set to begin later this summer, with an expected release in the summer of next year.
Julia Stiles is set to make her return in the film, with Alicia Vikander joining on to the franchise as well. Paul Greengrass will not only be directing the film, but also co-writing it with Christopher Rouse and hopefully, they’ll be able to recapture the perfect mix of high-adrenaline action with compelling stories and characters that the original three films possessed.
It will definitely be interesting to see how Jones is utilized in the film. It wouldn’t be much of a surprise if he is indeed playing a CIA officer, as Chris Cooper, Edward Norton, Brian Cox, and David Straithaim have all played roles along the same lines in the past films as well. Whether or not he’ll be the film’s villain or one of Bourne’s allies however, is completely unknown for the time being. Either way though, it’ll be hard to find an actor who can do it better than Tommy Lee Jones.
The newest installment in the Bourne franchise is set to hit theatres on July 29th, 2016.
