Box Office Preview: ‘Avengers’ Assemble for Week 2 Domination

The Avengers: Age of Ultron

While it may not be that surprising, it’s still definitely worth mentioning: Marvel’s premiere superhero team is on the warpath at the box office.

According to weekend projections from Variety, Marvel’s second major crossover film Avengers: Age of Ultron is expected to take in as much as $90 million for its second weekend at the box office. Last weekend, while Age of Ultron was the clear and decisive winner at the movies, it didn’t manage to outdo the massive 2012 opening of the first Avengers film, which may have been caused by a few different factors including comparatively poorer critical reception, and some serious competition from a lot of major sporting events. Still, the film has grossed just under $700 million worldwide so far, and is expected to cross the $1 billion mark by the time the film opens in China on May 12th.

The week’s only major new release, Warner Bros.’ Hot Pursuit starring Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara, isn’t expected to have a strong debut weekend, as analysts are only expecting it to take in $12-14 million on its $35 million budget. While it may stand a chance to persuade female movie-goers to see it as an alternative to the Avengers, critical reception to the movie has been abysmal, garnering a paltry 6% on Rotten Tomatoes.

A Sundance entry, The D-Train, is getting a slightly wider release this week, hitting 1,000 theaters. Analysts are only projecting about a $500,000 take for the film, though, which is disappointing. In our own review of the film from a Sundance screening, it seemed like more of a missed opportunity than anything else.

We’ll see how things end up when all is said and done, so keep an eye out for our final box office report for the weekend very soon!
