The Castlevania video game franchise is not only a staple of video game history for raising the quality standard all the way back in 1986, but has become one of the most ripe and imaginative fantasy worlds out there right now. Fans of the series have been hoping for a possible film adaptation for years now, and while a Castlevania project has been stuck in development in Hollywood for the past few years, it doesn’t look like gamers or moviegoers can look forward to a Castlevania adaptation on the silver screen for at least the next several years.
However, the video game franchise continues to be one of the most loved gaming properties of all time, and with the world and it’s vast array of characters more than ready for the taking, it looks like one of the biggest geeks working in the industry right now, may have just found a way to bring Castlevania to life. Only, it might not be the way you were expecting.
Producer Adi Shankar – known for the most recent Dredd film as well as his work on popular shorts like The Punisher: Dirty Laundry, Venom: Truth in Journalism, and the recent violent Power/Rangers reimagining – has confirmed that he is working on an anime-style miniseries based on Castlevania 3: Dracula’s Curse. Fred Seibert and Kevin Klonde will be working with Shankar as well on the project, and it is said to be a “super violent” take on the video game, with a dark and satirical tone.
While speaking with Collider, Shankar revealed some new details about the project, including how violent it is going to be, and his ambitions for the miniseries. Check out his full quote below:
“There will be a lot. The goal is to bring hard hitting anime to the America and be America’s first animated series for adults.”
In regards to what his influences for the series will be:
“Akira, Ghost in [the] Shell, Ninja Scroll, Young Justice aka the best series ever and it shouldn’t have been canceled wtf.”
That’s definitely not a bad list of influences, and something that a lot of geeks out there will probably appreciate. Without even that list though, Shankar has proven himself to be the perfect guy to bring Castlevania to life. Probably until Daredevil season 2 premieres, Dirty Laundry will probably stay as the best live-action Punisher adaptation that fans have ever seen, and Power/Rangers managed to turn a brand that has become the punchline of a joke into a bad ass property again.
Now, a lot of that has to do with the filmmakers, actors, and writers involved in each project as well, but there’s no denying the pure fan love that Shankar possesses for every property he plays with. Fans might not have been expecting the first onscreen Castlevania adaptation to be an animated miniseries, but in the hands of Adi Shankar, something tells me this will end up being exactly what fans have been waiting for.
The Castlevania miniseries is currently in development.
