Ever since it was announced that Cate Blanchett would be (probably) joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe via Thor: Ragnarok, fans have been curious to learn what role she would be playing. It was expected/hoped that she would end up playing the film’s main villain (you know, other than Loki), with the character of Enchantress emerging as the presumed favorite. However, if a recent report from Geek.com is to be believed, Blanchett will be playing a different foe for our Asgardian prince and his big, green friend.
Of course, none of this has been officially confirmed as of yet, so take all this with a grain of salt. Still it could prove to be true, so consider this your spoiler warning.
According to the report, instead of Enchantress, Blanchett will be playing a character named Hela, the Goddess of Death. She’s the Asgardian ruler of Hel and Niffleheim, two realms of the dead. She’s really not a nice lady.
In Thor: Ragnarok, it’s expected that Hela will team up with Loki (who, remember, is currently posing as Odin) to wreak havoc on Asgard. Naturally, this is where Thor and Hulk come in. Given that Ragnarok translates to “ultimate destruction of the gods following a battle against the forces of evil” in Norse mythology, we’re guessing things do not go well.
While this is an interesting development, what’s even more newsworthy is what’s rumored for Hela beyond making things unpleasant for Thor. Apparently, Hela could play a pivotal role in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War Part 1. If you’ve read The Infinity Gauntlet (and if you haven’t, you should), then you know Thanos uses the titular weapon in order to destroy half the population of the universe in order to impress and win the affections of Death. He’s just a silly Mad Titan in love, really. In the big screen version of this story, it’s rumor that Blanchett’s Hela could serve as a stand-in for the comic book incarnation of Death. After all, introducing a character who is literally Death might be a bit weird or confusing to viewers. But since we will have already met Hela and seen what she can do by the time that film rolls around, she could be a perfectly suitable mate for ol’ Thanos. The Avengers vs. Josh Brolin and Cate Blanchett? Yes, please.
Again, none of this has been confirmed yet. But if it’s true, well it’s super cool and totally needs to happen. We approve, Marvel.
Thor: Ragnarok is scheduled for release on November 3, 2017.
