Captain America: Civil War is shaping up to be the most anticipated entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far. Acting as a follow-up to the immensely successful Winter Soldier and featuring a line-up that dwarfs either Avengers film, this truly will be the biggest film Marvel Studios has ever produced. You know, until the next one comes out.
It’s also historic as Civil War features the debut of Black Panther, played by Chadwick Boseman. This is a character fans have long wanted to see on the big screen, and the few glimpses we caught of him in the trailer make it seem as though we will not be disappointed. Not that Marvel’s really let us down at all so far. They’re very good at what they do, aren’t they?
Speaking of that trailer, while Panther’s ultimate loyalties remain mysterious, it appears he initially joins up with Team Iron Man. This of course begs the big question: Do Panther and Cap throw down in Civil War? Given the fact that much of Panther’s suit is made of vibranium, the same substance that composes Cap’s shield, the prospect of these two going at it has fans’ interest very piqued. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly Radio (via ScreenRant), Boseman wouldn’t confirm whether or not we’ll see the two clash, but he at least picked a winner. Not surprisingly, he went with Black Panther.
“If you’re talking to [Floyd] Mayweather or [Manny] Pacquiao, before Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, then Mayweather is going to say he’ll win. And if you’re talking to Canelo [Alvarez], before the [Miguel] Cotto fight, Canelo’s gonna say he’s gonna win.”
I mean, they HAVE to fight, don’t they? It at least appears as though Panther will be trading blows with Bucky “Winter Soldier” Barnes, which I’m sure will be plenty cool. But I think we’d all like to see him and Cap go at it just a little bit, right?
Boseman went on to talk about the experience of wearing the Black Panther costume. While it may look cool (seriously, it looks REALLY cool), he admitted to occasionally feeling claustrophobic in it. The one bright spot?
“…there’s a lot of comfort in the shoes.”
That’s good. A superhero needs proper arch support if they’re going to be effective, right?
The most intriguing aspect of the Panther suit, and what makes the prospect of a fight with Captain America so exciting, is the fact that it’s composed mostly of vibranium. As we’ve seen in both of Cap’s solo adventures as well as the Avengers films, vibranium is able to absorb the energy of anything that attacks it, becoming stronger in the process. With an entire suit made of the stuff, Black Panther will clearly be a daunting foe for anyone who gets in his way. You know, like Captain America. I really want him to fight Captain America. Not sure if that’s clear or not.
Of course, Panther’s appearance in Civil War will serve as a lead-in to his own solo film in 2018, followed by his inclusion in the Avengers: Infinity War films. Cap, Iron Man, and even Spider-man may get more publicity headed into Civil War, but it’s clear Marvel has big plans for the Wakandan prince.
Captain America: Civil War is set for release on May 6, 2016.
