Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt Could Be Making ‘Ghostbusters’ Spin-Off

By July 29, 2015

The Ghostbusters franchise seems to be the talk of Sony Pictures lately. With director Paul Feig developing his reboot of the series with a group of very talented comediennes, to discussion surrounding the formation of a Ghostbusters shared universe, the studio seems to be putting some big plans into motion for the long-dormant series. A few months ago, we had heard rumblings of a new Ghostbusters spin-off with a male cast, with names like Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt being brought up as the likely actors to star.

Now, we may have some more solid confirmation about Sony at least moving forward with an additional film in the franchise, getting rebooted next summer. In an interview with MTV, screenwriter Drew Pearce was asked about whether or not the possible spin-off film could be put into motion, and his response was very telling. He said,

I’ve finished my work on that in the last couple weeks. Obviously it’s top secret, but there’s a gigantic bold idea that I came up with, and the Russo brothers — who did Captain America: The Winter Soldier and are doing Civil War at the moment — and Ivan Reitman, who did the original movie, are going to take that and run with it. Obviously I cannot tell you what it is, but hopefully in one year’s time you’ll know!

When asked specifically about the involvement of both Tatum and Pratt, Pearce was tight-lipped, but was open about the concept that he and the team have in mind.

That’s definitely the cast we’ve been thinking about as we approach the project. Whether that happens or not is very much above my pay grade. It’s just my job to give them something exciting that maybe they’ll do.

Pearce later took to Twitter to clarify some of the comments he had made, giving more context to the makeup of the team, as well as what work he has actually done.

Overall, it seems like some very interesting things are afoot for the new Ghostbusters franchise. The new efforts from both Feig and Pearce have a huge legacy to live up to, since the original film starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson still ranks as one of the most well-loved comedies of the 1980’s. Still, it should be interesting to see how far either of these new efforts go in trying to win audiences over, since the general consensus among many fans ranges from cautious optimism to downright venom.

Ghostbusters starring Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig will open in theaters on July 22nd, 2016. For more on the films as they develop further, keep it locked on GeekNation!
