Charlie Kaufman’s Beautiful Looking, Stop Motion ‘Anomalisa’ Get’s a Trailer

By November 2, 2015

Well this one came out of nowhere and knocked me right between the eyes. And for those of you unfamiliar with Charlie Kaufman’s (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Adaptation) latest directing and writing project in the form of a stop motion film entitled Anomalisa, I’m happy to drop this amazing trailer for you all so you can get caught up.

Because, let me just say, Charlie Kaufman is one of the all time greats when it comes to story and writing and this new trailer does nothing but fill me with confidence. Looks like we are getting something, not only original, but also amazingly heart felt and special.

Check out the trailer before doing anything else:

Anomalisa has been getting rave reviews from a number of my colleagues ever since it debuted at this past years’ Toronto International Film Festival. Some are saying it’s not only amazing, but it’s also one of the most amazing films of all time, stop motion or not.

With the trailer dropping thanks to JoBlo, here’s the official synopsis:

Michael Stone, husband, father and respected author of “How May I Help You Help Them?” is a man crippled by the mundanity of his life. On a business trip to Cincinnati, where he’s scheduled to speak at a convention of customer service professionals, he checks into the Fregoli Hotel. There, he is amazed to discover a possible escape from his desperation in the form of an unassuming Akron baked goods sales rep, Lisa, who may or may not be the love of his life. A beautifully tender and absurdly humorous dreamscape, from the brilliant minds of Charlie Kaufman (SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK) and Duke Johnson (“Community” episode, Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas), this stop-motion animation wonder features the vocal cast of Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tom Noonan and David Thewlis and a stirring strings-based score by Carter Burwell.

It will be interesting to see if a movie like this will do well in today’s film marketplace. Its wholly original premise is unlike anything we’ve seen in a long while. I love me some Charlie Kaufman so it’s no surprise that I am as giddy as ever after watching this trailer. Now, we’ll see if the studio behind it, Paramount, can get your average movie-goer into the theatre. And as your public service announcement of the day, all I will say is I hope film lovers of all shapes and size turn out to see this amazing looking film. We need more original material like this out there in the marketplace.

Anomalisa opens in limited release on December 30th, 2015.
