If there’s one film genre that Hollywood has never quite gotten right, it’s the video game adaptation. It’s not for lack of effort, of course. They’ve tried numerous times to pull it off, but most of their efforts have fallen somewhere between “disappointing” and “what the f***?”, with maybe only the Resident Evil franchise qualifying as successful-ish.
In 2016, Hollywood’s giving it another try (twice!), with Assassin’s Creed and Warcraft. The latter debuted a new TV spot earlier today during the AFC Championship game and you should watch it with your eyeballs.
Obviously this film has a built-in fanbase with its legions of players (near 7 million at last count), so it should be something of a success. It will be interesting to see how the folks at Universal and Legendary Pictures target people like me who have never played a second of World of Warcraft and therefore don’t really feel an obligation to see it. I mean, it looks perfectly entertaining and all, but it doesn’t necessarily strike me as being vastly different from, say, Lord of the Rings. Except I guess orcs are nicer in this one. I’m sure it will draw a crowd upon its release, but the real trick will be making enough money that the studio(s) can justify a sequel or twelve.
Warcraft stars Dominic Cooper, Ben Foster, Travis Fimmel, and Paula Patton. It is set for release on June 10, 2016.
