China Denies ‘Deadpool’ Release Due to Graphic Violence & That’s Not Good

By January 18, 2016

Let’s all hope the Deadpool box office is just as un-killable as its anti-hero.

According to THRChina has just denied the release of Deadpool due to graphic violence, nudity and graphic language.

They don’t have a ratings system in China and instead rely on a media regulator to thumbs up or thumbs down each movie for all ages release. They usually work with studios (especially companies like Marvel)  to provide a more censored approach to graphic films. Apparently Deadpool was just too dirty to cut. The studio said taking anything else out of the film would require cutting major plot points.

On one hand, it’s really exciting to see a movie not be afraid to let it all hang out and be a true un-censored, R rated bash of old. When I was a kid my parents would let me watch just about anything; just had to close my eyes for the naked parts (totally peaked). Nowadays studios are reluctant to make even horror movies rated R for fear of box office backlash. Deadpool wouldn’t have even been made for this very reason, had some awesome test footage not slipped out at Comic-con a few years ago, forcing the studios to change stance.

Here’s why this is all a very bad thing (even if you don’t live in China); if there is to be any hope of a Deadpool sequel, this film has to crush it at the box office.

If the numbers aren’t up to par because the movie couldn’t air in the worlds second biggest movie market, then best case scenario we get a PG-13 Deadpool sequel. Worst case scenario we never see Deadpool on screen again. Worst, worst case scenario this scares the studios into their brown pants and they never even try an R rated superhero film again. Not good.

This also doesn’t bode well for the recent petition for FOX to make a PG-13 Deadpool cut for kids to be able to see. If they aren’t going to do it for China (and their millions), they probably can’t do it for little Timmy, either.

Well, that’s all the bad news for this Monday article, GeekNation! Be sure to check back for updates! (Maybe happier ones)

  • We’ll all just have to see it 6 times each!

Hurrah for Dead Pool!!! Taking a hard R stance is good. This isn’t a film that is being made for a huge budget or for the faint of heart. To make bank the gross does not necessarily need to be big. Ryan Reynolds commented just last year on how much of a shoe string budget the film was made for “We don’t have the kind of money that most superhero movies do, but
that’s great, actually. Necessity is the mother of invention, and that’s
why we get to make the movie we want to make.”
