Chris Rock Returning to ‘Saturday Night Live’ to Host in November

By October 14, 2014

Bill Murray may have a televised Christmas special on the way with Lost in Translation director Sofia Coppola at the helm, but he’s still not lined up to host “Saturday Night Live” this season. But the late night sketch show is reaching back into the history of Studio 8H for another veteran cast member to host.

NBC announced today that Chris Rock will return to “SNL” on November 1st with musical guest Prince. Rock hosted for the first time back in 1996, and this will only be his second time as host since the comedian was a cast member from 1990-1993. This also marks the third “SNL” veteran to host the show this season with Chris Pratt being the only ones who wasn’t previously a cast member.

Since his time on the show, Rock has become one of the biggest stand-up comedians of all time, hosted his own talk show on HBO, created his own sitcom, and also starred in several feature films, some of which he wrote and directed himself. But “SNL” certainly had a hand in launching his career, even though Rock only had a few recurring characters. Could we see the return of Nat X? If you don’t know what we’re talking about, watch this:

Rock’s return to “SNL” is a smart move for the comedian since he’ll have his latest directorial effort, a film called Top Five, hitting theaters a month later on December 5th. Funnily enough, in the film he plays a stand-up comedian dealing with success and fame, something Rock is certainly familiar with.

When a veteran from long ago like this comes back to the show, usually some fun guest stars pop up, so maybe we’ll see some cast members from Rock’s time on the show pop up. It’s just a shame that one of them can’t be Chris Farley.

But maybe Prince will also get in on the comedy fun? The iconic pop star made a guest appearance on the previous season of “New Girl” after the Super Bowl in January, so he’s no stranger to being funny. Anyway, I’ll be looking forward to reviewing this episode in a few weeks, but first up, Jim Carrey hosts on October 25th. Stay tuned.
