There used to be a period in Hollywood, when movie stars alone could sell films. By slapping the right face on a new poster with at least a B-quality movie, the studio could probably feel about as safe about the project as they ever could. Nowadays though, it seems more and more like its the writers and directors who are beginning to make audiences excited. Aside from the Marvel and DC movies, which sell tickets based on their branding alone, it seems like moviegoers are becoming more aware of the people behind the camera, even more than those in front of it.
Christopher Nolan has become one of these said directors, where his projects become more and more like events than anything else nowadays. After garnering a more than large following with his work on The Dark Knight Trilogy as well as some of his original films like Inception or Memento – Nolan has become one of the most beloved filmmakers in the industry today, even if you might have some problems with his last two features.
Following the release of the divisive Interstellar last year though, fans have been in the dark regarding what they can expect next from the filmmaker. Well, while we still don’t know what his next movie will be, we now know when his next film will be.
Variety has reported that Warner Bros. has added officially Nolan’s next, currently untitled movie to their busy 2017 slate, with a July 21st release date. The movie will be pitted directly against Pitch Perfect 3, Luc Besson’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, and will be released one week after War of the Planet of the Apes and Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales. It’ll also be released one week ahead of Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man reboot, and it’s likely that at least some of these films will be shuffled around at some point between now and then.
No other details about the movie have been revealed, and while we can assume that at least some kind of draft of its screenplay is likely completed, the project’s genre, story, or even logline will have to remain unknown for the moment. Warner Bros. has all distribution rights for the film after Nolan established a strong working relationship with the studio through his Dark Knight movies, and he will be producing the movie once again with Syncopy Films and his producer/spouse, Emma Thomas.
This’ll be the first feature film from Nolan since the previously mentioned Interstellar, although he did recently release a short documentary on the Quay Brothers. Whether or not he’ll be returning to a large property/franchise, or creating another big-budget original film – it’ll be interesting to see what Nolan’s next move is in his already impressive career.
Christopher Nolan’s Untitled New Film is set for release on July 21st, 2017.
