It began in 2007 with a simple premise:
and with that, Drunk History was born.
Created by actor Derek Waters (Funny or Die, Hall Pass), each episode of Drunk History is comprised of one of Derek’s comedian friends getting absolutely s***faced then discussing a historical event of their choice; with their drunken word-for-word accounts acted out by the likes of Michael Cera, Danny McBride, Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Don Cheadle, Crispin Glover, Zooey Deschanel and Jack Black, you can’t help but laugh at the sloppy.
Here’s the cool thing: this web series only produced eight episodes over the span of 6 years; the recent Christmas episode was the first one shot in two-and-a-half years and starred Ryan Gosling, Jim Carrey and Eva Mendes.
Will Ferrell as Abraham Lincoln and Don Cheadle as Frederick Douglass.
At 7 minutes or less, these hugely popular episodes that drunkenly cover true historical events such as Edison vs Tesla, George and Martha Washington, Ben Franklin and the story of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass’ friendship (which won the 2010 Sundance Film Festival Jury Prize for Best American Short Film) are what made Comedy Central decide to take a gamble and order eight 30-minute episodes that’ll air on the network this summer.
Executive produced by Gary Sanchez Productions (comprised of Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, Chris Henchy and Owen Burke), creator/star Derek Waters and Drunk History writer-director Jeremy Konner, the union with the comedy network seems like a match made in Heaven so far.
Kent Alterman, Head of Original Programming and Production at Comedy Central says of the show, “As they always say…history, like revenge, is a dish best served drunk.”
EP and former SNL head writer Adam McKay added that “Will and I have always believed booze brings out truth, sometimes that truth involves hitting on airport bar janitors or eating cheese fries at 4 a.m. But in this case, we hope that truth will shine on our nation’s history.”
Check out the episode that started it all: the Hamilton/Burr duel (starring Michael Cera as Alexander Hamilton) as told by actor Mark Gagliardi (Lemmings, Ghost Whisperer: The Other Side).
NSFW due to language, so bust out dem headphones!
And because I’m in a good mood, enjoy the story of Edison and Tesla (starring John C. Reilly and Crispin Glover) as told by actor/comedian Duncan Trussell (Nick Swardson’s Pretend Time).
Also NSFW so put dem headphones back on!
Once Duncan smiles, you just KNOW something special’s about to happen and there’s NEVER a wrong time for Back To The Future‘s Crispin Glover!!
I’ve been a fan since 2007 and can’t WAIT for this summer to roll around for some new drunken history adventures! But until then, I’ll keep watching the existing adventures available on their YouTube channel (because they NEVER stop being funny).
“Edison was an A**HOLE!”
In vino veritas, darlings.
