Comedy Central is giving “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” and “The Colbert Report” some permanent late night company.

After trying out the new late night, social media savvy, game show-style comedy “@Midnight” for about a month, Comedy Central has decided to give it a 40-week series order. That might sound weird at first, but @Midnight airs Monday through Thursday right after “The Colbert Report.” That means we’ll be getting 160 episodes of the show hosted by Nerdist mastermind and comedian Chris Hardwick.

For those who haven’t been paying attention, “@Midnight” combines the crazy buzz of what’s popular and trending on the Internet, especially social media, and lets comedians riff on a wide range of topics on the spot. Three comedians compete for points in events like #HashtagWars, Rapid Refresh and more, skewering all aspects of pop culture by way of the web.

Looking for an example? Well, in #HashtagWars, they utilize the presence of occasional “games” on Twitter involving their hashtag element. One such topic was #SuckyActionMovies which warranted responses like Skymall and Snakes on a Plain Bagel. Yours truly actually made the top ten (one tweet gets featured on the show every night) with the topic #FailedBusinesses, and the entry was Jar Jar Brinks Armored Cars. Here’s one of the segments:

The show is fast-paced, fun, topical and integrates users by way of Twitter and more. That’s why the series is is the third-highest-ranked late-night show in all of television — cable or broadcast — behind only Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report.” The series is even beating the other new late night cable program “The Pete Holmes Show” is every single ratings category. As President of Content Development and Original Programming at Comedy Central says, “If the internet catches on and social media becomes a part of pop culture, we think we’ll really have something here.”
