Less than a week ago, word came out that Ridley Scott was looking to direct a new movie about the effects of violence in professional football – specifically, the concussion problems that have triggered dangerous, lasting effects for players later in life. And since this is Hollywood, and seemingly no movie can make it through production without the threat of another film beating them to the punch, a new movie covering the same subject matter has been announced – and this one will likely hit theaters first.
Deadline reports that Isaiah Washington, who has been getting rave reviews for his work in this year’s Beltway sniper drama Blue Caprice, is looking to star in Game Time Decision, an indie from writer/director Matthew A. Cherry. Washington would play a retired NFL player who’s suffering from a degenerative brain disease who tries to warn his estranged son about returning to the game too soon following a concussion. This is subject matter near and dear to Cherry’s heart, considering he was a former pro NFL player himself and has seen firsthand the effects of what those big hits on the field can do to friends and colleagues. (He also made his feature directorial debut on a movie called The Last Fall, which covered similar material.)
We’re guessing because this movie has a writer, a director, a title, and a star, it’s safe to assume it’ll roll before Scott wrangles his production up. But will the existence of this project be enough to put Scott off from trying his movie altogether? Chris Nolan was developing a Howard Hughes biopic when Scorsese beat him to it with The Aviator, so he ended up abandoning that project. We’ll see if Scott ends up moving on with his busy schedule or if he’s passionate enough about this idea to make his own film anyway.
