Concept Art From Warner Bros. Hints At Which Two Heroes Will Lead the ‘Green Lantern Corps’

By December 6, 2015
This is just a small taste of the many, many great characters that make up DC Comics' Green Lantern Corps. At its best, its space opera meets superhero storytelling.

Let’s all just agree that 2011′s Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds never happened, ok? Like Rocky V or the Mathew Broderick Godzilla movie, it’s best to just ignore its existence and move on. Reynolds has certainly worked hard to distance himself from the film, and with DC Comics and Warner Bros. creating a brand new cinematic universe beginning with next year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it’s clear all parties desire a fresh start.

That fresh start will come in 2020 when Green Lantern Corps is released. While we still know very little about the film, a few clues are beginning to roll out. There was some concept art shown at last summer’s Comic Con that hinted the film will center around Hal Jordan and John Stewart, but no official announcement has been made. Jordan and Stewart are, of course, the two best-known Lanterns given their long comic book and cartoon histories, but some have suspected Jordan may be subbed out in favor of Guy Gardner or Kyle Rayner due to the stigma left over from the 2011 film (that never happened, remember?). However, a report coming out of Italy suggests that Hal is still onboard to lead the Corps once again.

According to the Italian site Cinefilos (courtesy ComicBookMovie), Warner Bros. unveiled some more Green Lantern concept art (or possibly the same that was shown at Comic Con) at the recent Professional Days of Cinema event in Sorrento. The report (translated from Italian) states:

Already a few weeks ago there was talk of the Green Lantern Corps and how this new moment in the history of the DC characters in the cinema would have favored diversity.

Now suspects that Hal Jordan and John Stewart can be deployed together in the film DC / Warner become more concrete following the panel Warner during the Professional Days of Cinema of Sorrento . The event was shown a featurette of the universe DC in progress to the movies and among other things we have seen a concept of the Green Lantern Corps in which stood out clearly the two characters. That may be the final clue?

I bet that original Italian version sounds a lot better.

So far the concept art hasn’t surfaced anywhere, so as always with reports like this things should be taken with a grain of salt. However, it would make the most sense for Hal Jordan and John Stewart to be the featured characters in the new Green Lantern Corps film, so if you take anything away from this report it should be that DC and Warner are making the smartest move. Besides, once this film comes out it will have been 9 years since Hal’s ill-fated big screen debut. That should give people plenty of time to forget that movie that never happened.

We still have zero casting news for this film, though Chris Pine was a leading candidate for Hal before taking the role of Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman instead. Tyrese Gibson has been campaigning for the role of John Stewart for a very long time. But, again, the movie doesn’t come out until 2020, so there’s still plenty of time to figure things out. One thing’s for sure, if DC gets it right this time, it will be awesome to have the Green Lantern Corps back on the big screen.

Green Lantern Corps is scheduled for release on June 19, 2020.
