‘Constantine’ Gets Stay Of Execution In New Animated Series

Constantine may not have survived beyond its first season at NBC, but the character himself is enjoying a nice afterlife.

After a guest appearance in a 2015 episode of Arrow, The CW now says it will produce a new Constantine animated series.

The CW president Mark Pedowitz made the announcement Sunday in front of the Television Critics Association while also confirming that original series star Matt Ryan would return to provide the voice of the character.

But before fans get excited, there’s a bit of a caveat here: Constantine won’t be a feature-length series, and it won’t air as part of the network’s regular lineup of superhero shows that also includes Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl. Instead, Constantine will be positioned as an online series of 10-minute episodes on CW Seed.

David Goyer will reprise his role as executive producer for Constantine’s animated excursion, along with Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter, the team behind The CW’s lineup of other DC-related offerings.

This isn’t the first time that a DC Comics character has appeared in animated form on CW Seed, the channel’s digital outlet. Vixen premiered in 2015 (also with Berlanti in a showrunner capacity), and a live-action version of the character was even featured in an episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

Early next year will also mark the debut of Freedom Fighters: The Ray, which will boast the first openly gay superhero to lead his own series.

As far as the possibility of Constantine being resurrected for a live-action series, Pedowitz admitted there are no plans at this time. But much like his animated predecessor, it wouldn’t be outside the realm of possibility to see him pop up for another guest appearance somewhere along the way.

Constantine debuted on NBC in 2013, but lasted just 13 episodes. Ryan, who played the title character, revived him in a one-off episode of Arrow where Constantine is an old friend of Stephen Amell’s Oliver Queen.
