Daisy Ridley Says Not to Expect a ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ Title Announcement Anytime Soon

By August 26, 2016

Despite keeping a steady stream of updates going with the fans and almost non-stop social media presences from a majority of the cast and creative team members involved, it’s crazy to think about how much we still don’t know when it comes to director Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII. One of the biggest and most obvious being, the film’s mysterious title, though we’ve seen more than a fair share of rumored titles running around online already.

Many fans had thought the title would be revealed sometime during Star Wars Celebration Europe this year, but it looks like we may not know what the title is for quite some time still.

While appearing on the My Dad Wrote a Porno Podcast (h/t Star Wars Underworld), Daisy Ridley says she’s not even sure what the title of the film is right now, and that fans probably shouldn’t expect to know it any time soon:

“I heard a title, but I don’t know if it’s going to be that. I really don’t know much about anything. I heard the title a long time ago before we started filming, and so I feel some things have slightly tweaked during production. It’s going to be a while before it’s released I imagine.”

Well, that’s probably not the news we were all hoping or expecting to hear right about now.

We imagine that Ridley probably knows more than she’s saying here, but what she says about the studio being in no rush to reveal the title is probably accurate as well, with Rogue One still set to hit theatres this coming December. We bet they’re doing their best right now to make sure the next saga film doesn’t overshadow their first spin-off.

The Force Awakens title was revealed 13 months before the film was released in November 2014, so it’s possible Disney and Lucasfilm are trying to stick to a similar timeline here, and maybe we can keep our eyes open for the announcement sometime in November or December? If the rumors and speculation of the first Episode VIII trailer being attached to Rogue One, that would make sense, at least. If there’s one thing Disney and Lucasfilm have proven to us before though, it’s that we really don’t ever know what they’re going to have up their sleeves next.

Star Wars: Episode VIII is set to hit theatres on December 15th, 2017.
