Update: Variety claims Bruhl will be playing a secondary villain in Civil War, but could be the primary villain in Doctor Strange. More below.
Marvel just announced that Inglourious Basterds, Rush, and The Fifth Estate star Daniel Bruhl has joined the cast of Captain America: Civil War in a mystery role. Deadline claims he’s playing the villain, but it’s still unclear as to which specific character that will be.
In the Civil War comic, Captain America and Iron Man form opposing factions over legislation that requires super-powered people to register to the government and reveal their secret identities. We already know that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is going to take a slightly different entry point into this storyline (considering secret identities don’t really play a role in the MCU), but it’s easy to see how the events of The Avengers and the destruction that’s coming in Avengers: Age of Ultron will make civilians even more uneasy than usual about the idea of people flying through the sky, smashing buildings, and generally causing mayhem.
We already know that Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther will make his debut in this sequel, and Robert Downey Jr. is returning to play Iron Man/Tony Stark. Who could Bruhl be playing? Marvel is keeping their mouths shut, but could be be a government official who spurs the Registration Act into place? A member of a new task force put in place to protect humanity, now that S.H.I.E.L.D. has fallen? Or someone else entirely? We’d love to hear your guesses in the comments below, but I’m glad Bruhl is getting in on the action here because he’s a great young talent that has definitely left an impact with the role’s he’s had in recent years.
Here’s the press release:
Daniel Bruhl (“Rush,” “Inglourious Basterds”) has joined the cast of Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War,” set to rock the Marvel Cinematic Universe on May 6, 2016.
The celebrated actor earned Golden Globe, SAG, BAFTA and Critics’ Choice nominations for his role as Niki Lauda in director Ron Howard’s “Rush.” In addition to Howard, Bruhl has also worked with other esteemed directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Paul Greengrass, Anton Corbijn, and Michael Winterbottom.
Bruhl joins Chris Evans (Captain America), Robert Downey, Jr. (Iron Man), and Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) in “Captain America: Civil War,” with Joe and Anthony Russo returning to direct after this year’s hit Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”
“With Daniel’s ability to deliver intense, nuanced performances, we knew we had found yet another great actor to share the screen with some of our biggest heroes,” said Producer Kevin Feige.
Update: Variety backs up the claim that Bruhl will be playing a villain, saying the following: “Sources tell Variety that Bruhl, who co-starred in ‘Rush,’ is not the main villain in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ but could potentially be the top menace in Marvel’s ‘Dr. Strange.'” That’s a fascinating notion, but not too surprising considering the ever-increasing connectivity between films in the MCU. Might we see Bruhl face off against his Fifth Estate co-star Benedict Cumberbatch as the villain and hero of Doctor Strange? Time will tell.
