A classic Captain America villain has been cast to appear as an antagonist amidst a conflict between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark in the upcoming May 2016 superhero film from Marvel Studios.

According to an article in British newspaper The Independent, actor Daniel Brühl (Inglorious Basterds, Rush) has confirmed that he will be playing Marvel villain Baron Zemo in Captain America: Civil War, a film featuring almost as many characters as an Avengers film.

Zemo is one of Cap’s major antagonists from the comics, second only to the Red Skull on the list of the Star-Spangled Avenger’s arch enemies, and is actually a title shared between two characters. In the comics, Baron Heinrich Zemo opposed Cap, the Invaders, and the Howling Commandos during the second World War as a primary scientist for Nazi Germany. His son, Baron Helmut Zemo, continued his father’s legacy of belief in the “master race” and would come into conflict with Cap after his awakening decades after the war, and would oppose he and the likes of the Avengers.

The article states that the version of Zemo that Brühl will be portraying will be Helmut Zemo. It’s not currently known exactly how big a role Zemo will play, since the conflict between Captain America and Iron Man will be taking center stage, as well as the fact that the film will feature the reappearance of Frank Grillo’s Brock Rumlow, aka Crossbones, who was disfigured at the end of last year’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Actor Chadwick Boseman will also be appearing as T’Challa/Black Panther, and Civil War is also where the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s version of Spider-Man is expected to debut as well.

Captain America: Civil War will open in theaters on May 6th, 2016. For more on the film as it develops, keep an eye on GeekNation!
