When Daredevil first premiered on Netflix earlier this year, no one really knew what to expect from the series. The trailers and promos had looked promising, but the show also didn’t look like anything Marvel Studios had ever done before, in both television or film. What audiences ended up getting was a brutal, violent, dark, grimy, and almost poetic show about what motivates us to fight for the things we love. By the time the final episode had ended, audiences were begging for more, and the show was already being called one of the best things that Marvel had ever put out.
Well, the studios didn’t waste any time after that. When questions and rumors started running around online regarding what fans could expect to see in the sophomore season, Marvel came out of nowhere by casting Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle a.k.a. The Punisher, and it blew everyones’ minds. For fans, the idea of The Punisher showing up at all in the MCU had seemed more like a pipe dream than anything else, something that had the tiniest possibility of actually happening. But it is, and Bernthal seems like the best choice to take on the role moving forward.
Marvel and Netflix have already done their fair job of teasing the new season, whether it be Matt Murdock’s (Charlie Cox) evolving costume or the new details being revealed on a pretty consistent basis – there’s no denying that season 2 of Daredevil is about to take the already large and rich world created in season one and make it even bigger. It looks like Matt Murdock is going to meet his match possibly with Frank Castle too, with Jon Bernthal tweeting out a behind-the-scenes image from the new season that teases Castle’s rather large personal armory. Taking just how bad ass this image is into consideration, as well as the knowledge that The Punisher will be acting as the main antagonist against Matt Murdock for at least the majority of this season, just makes this image even cooler. Considering how passionate Bernthal seems to be about the character as well, and the incredibly dark tone established in the first season, you can’t help but believe this will end up being the best and most true adaptation of the character onscreen that we’ve seen yet.
Perhaps what made Daredevil so well-recieved when it debuted though, was the fact that it told the stories comic book fans have been asking for for years. The dark and underground stories of the Marvel Comics that provided more heart and legitimate toughness to some of their most beloved characters, that seeing those stories told onscreen in such a perfect way – it was hard not to love it. With both The Punisher and Elektra hopefully getting their moment to finally shine in the next season as well, it looks like Daredevil season 2 has more than enough going for it at this point.
Daredevil Season 2 is set to debut on Netflix in 2016.
